in our own words

Bude is the largest seaside town on this stretch of coast, about 15 miles north of Lower Pennycrocker Farm along the A39. It's ideal for a beach day, especially with children.

Beaches

  • Summerleaze: the town beach, with the tidal sea pool built into the rocks.
  • Crooklets: next to Summerleaze, popular with surfers.
  • Widemouth Bay: a big sandy beach just south of Bude, on the way back to the farm.

Lifeguards patrol the main beaches in the season; always swim between the flags. See our beach guide.

Bude Sea Pool

A tidal swimming pool on Summerleaze beach, refreshed by the sea at high tide. It's a safe-feeling dip for families. Check whether it's open before you go.

Canal and heritage

Walk or cycle along the Bude Canal, then visit the Bude Castle Heritage Centre, which is good on a rainy day.

Shopping

Bude has supermarkets, so it's handy for stocking up on supplies for the campsite.

Bude for families and surfers

Bude is one of the best places on the North Cornwall coast for families, with big beaches, lifeguards in season and lots of space. It's also a popular surf town, with schools offering lessons for beginners. Book lessons ahead in summer.

Bude with dogs

Some of Bude's beaches have seasonal dog restrictions. Check signs, or ask at the tourist information centre, before you go.

Bude in autumn

In September and October, the beaches are quieter, the sea is often at its warmest and the light is soft. Our autumn camping in Cornwall post has more ideas.
