Camping on the coast: weather tips

The north coast can be breezy. Bring proper tent pegs for grass, guy everything out, and pitch with your door away from the wind. Our packing list covers the essentials and the Tips blog has more advice.

Groups

We take groups of up to 8 people. For larger parties, please choose another site, as we keep the fields quiet for everyone.

Tent camping in Cornwall on a quiet farm

There is something special about tent camping in Cornwall: waking up to birdsong, unzipping the door to green fields and a strip of blue sea, and knowing the coast path is half a mile away. At Lower Pennycrocker Farm near Boscastle we keep our fields open and uncrowded, so tent campers get room to spread out. Our family has farmed here for more than 80 years, and Colin and Karyn run the campsite themselves.

What a tent pitch includes

  • A grass pitch with room for your tent, porch and pup tent
  • Parking beside your pitch
  • Free hot showers, toilets, a disabled toilet and a washing-up room
  • Optional electric hook-up at £7 a night
  • Free awnings and pup tents

Pitching in a coastal breeze

North Cornwall is beautiful but exposed, and the wind can pick up quickly. A few habits make tent camping much more comfortable:

  • Pitch with the narrow, lowest end of the tent into the wind.
  • Use all the guy lines, and take spare heavy-duty pegs — rock pegs or long steel pegs grip better than the thin ones supplied with most tents.
  • Check and re-tension lines in the evening, and again if the weather changes.
  • Keep a windbreak for cooking, but never cook inside a closed tent.

Staying warm and dry

Even in summer, nights on the north coast can be cool. Bring a sleeping bag rated for a few degrees colder than you expect, an insulated mat or airbed with a blanket on top, and a warm hat. Waterproofs and a spare pair of shoes are essential. A small electric heater on a hook-up pitch can make early spring and late October trips much cosier.

Tent camping with children and dogs

Families love tent camping here: children aged 5 and over are £5 a night, and pup tents are free, so older children can have their own tent beside yours. Up to two dogs are welcome at £2 each. Read family camping in Cornwall, camping with kids in Cornwall and dog-friendly camping.

If this is your first camping trip, don't worry — plenty of our guests are new to it. Practise pitching at home, pack a head torch and some easy meals, and arrive in daylight so you have time to set up. Our first-time camping tips and packing list cover the basics.

Days out from your tent

From the farm you can walk to the coast path, drive two miles to Boscastle harbour, or head further to Tintagel, Crackington Haven and the beaches near Boscastle. Come back to a hot shower and a quiet evening under big skies.

Choosing your pitch

If you prefer peace, ask for a spot towards the edge of a field; if you want to be close to the showers and toilets, say so when you arrive and we'll point you in the right direction. Parking is beside your pitch, which makes unloading a family tent much easier. Read our first-time camping tips if this is your first trip under canvas.
