in our own words

The farm is about half a mile from the South West Coast Path, so some of the finest walking in Cornwall starts almost from your tent. Here are our favourite walks near Boscastle. Distances are approximate; always take a proper map.

Boscastle harbour and Willapark

A short circuit from the harbour up to the white lookout tower on Willapark headland, with views along the coast. Steep in places but short.

Pentargon waterfall

Follow the coast path north-east from Boscastle to look down on Pentargon, where a stream drops off the cliff into the sea. Stay on the path; the edges are sheer.

The Valency valley and St Juliot church

A wooded valley walk inland from Boscastle to St Juliot church, where the young Thomas Hardy worked as an architect and met his first wife, Emma. Gentle, shaded and good on a hot or blustery day.

Boscastle to Tintagel

A classic stretch of coast path of roughly five miles, past Rocky Valley. Many walkers take the bus or a taxi one way. See our Tintagel guide.

Crackington Haven and High Cliff

North of us, the coast path climbs over Cambeak and on towards High Cliff, the highest cliff in Cornwall. Hard going but spectacular. Start at Crackington Haven.

Before you set out

  • Wear proper boots; the path is steep and can be muddy.
  • Check the weather and the time of sunset.
  • Keep dogs on a lead near cliffs and livestock.

Walking from Lower Pennycrocker Farm

The South West Coast Path is about half a mile from the farm, so you can start some of North Cornwall's finest walks straight from your pitch. Here's our guide to walks near Boscastle, from short strolls to full-day hikes, plus advice on staying safe.

Short walks

  • Lane to the coast path (about half a mile each way): an easy stroll to the clifftop for sea views and sunsets.
  • Boscastle harbour: park in the village and explore the harbour and river.

Half-day walks

  • Farm to Boscastle: follow the coast path to the village, about 2 miles, then return the same way or by the lanes. The path is hilly and unfenced in places.
  • Valency valley: a sheltered woodland route inland from Boscastle, good on breezy days.

Full-day walks

  • Boscastle to Tintagel: a demanding, spectacular stretch of the coast path. Plan transport for the return.
  • Towards Crackington Haven: big cliffs and remote coves; one of the toughest sections of the path. See our Crackington Haven guide.

Walking safety

  • Stay on the path and away from cliff edges, which can crumble.
  • Check the weather and avoid exposed sections in strong winds.
  • Carry water, food, waterproofs and a charged phone; signal can be patchy.
  • Wear walking boots — paths can be muddy and steep.
  • Keep dogs on a lead near cliffs and livestock.
  • Tell someone your route and expected return time.

Walking with children and dogs

Shorter sections near the farm are great for families. With dogs, follow our dog-friendly camping tips and take plenty of water.

Seasonal walking notes

  • Spring: wildflowers line the hedges and clifftops, and the paths are quieter.
  • Summer: long evenings mean late walks with sunsets over the sea; start early to avoid the heat.
  • Autumn: clear days and calmer crowds make this a great time for longer hikes.

Paths can be muddy after rain at any time of year, so walking boots are a must.

Walking maps and apps

Carry an OS map or a reliable mapping app, and download offline maps before you set out, as signal can be patchy along the coast.
