in our own words
Crackington Haven is a small cove a few miles north of Lower Pennycrocker Farm, framed by dramatic cliffs. It's our nearest big beach and a favourite with guests for swimming, rock pooling and sunsets.
The beach
At low tide there's a stretch of sand between the pebbles and the rocks, with rock pools at either side. At high tide the beach is much smaller, so check the tide times.
Geology
The cliffs here show spectacular folded rock layers, the "Crackington Formation", worth a look even if you're not a geologist.
Walks
Climb the coast path south to Cambeak headland, or north towards High Cliff, the highest cliff in Cornwall. See walks near Boscastle.
Facilities
There's a car park, a pub and a café near the beach. Parking fills up on sunny summer days, so go early.
Sunsets
Crackington faces west, so the evening light can be beautiful. Several of the photos on this site were taken here.
Crackington Haven through the day
Morning is the quietest time at the beach, with early walkers and surfers checking the waves. By midday in summer, families arrive for sandcastles and rock pools, and the café and pub near the beach get busy. As the sun drops, the cliffs glow orange and the cove empties again — a good time for a walk along the shore.
Surfing and swimming
Crackington Haven can have good waves, but conditions vary and rip currents form. Only swim or surf when it's safe and within your ability, and check whether lifeguard cover is in place. If you're new to surfing, Bude is a better place to take a lesson.
Geology for curious minds
The cliffs here show dramatic zigzag folds in the rock, a striking sight for anyone with an interest in geology. Look from a safe distance — the cliffs are unstable and rock falls happen.
Crackington Haven for walkers
Walk south from the beach on the coast path for big views and big climbs. It's a demanding stretch, so take water and allow plenty of time. Our best walks from Boscastle post describes the route.
