Rooftop tent camping in Cornwall

in our own words

Campers sitting beside their tent on a hilltop at sunset

Rooftop tents have become a popular way to explore Cornwall, combining the freedom of a road trip with a comfortable bed above the ground. If you're planning a rooftop tent trip to North Cornwall, Lower Pennycrocker Farm is a quiet, family-run campsite at St Juliot, about two miles from Boscastle.

Can I bring a rooftop tent?

We welcome tents, touring caravans, motorhomes and campervans. Rooftop tents aren't listed separately on our website, so please call us on 07967 605392 to check before you book. We'll tell you honestly what we can offer.

Rooftop tent tips for Cornwall

Wind

The North Cornwall coast can be windy, especially on open clifftop fields. Check the forecast, park with the tent facing a sensible direction, and secure everything. Read our wind and rain camping guide.

Levelling

Our pitches are on grass, so bring levelling ramps to get your vehicle flat. A level vehicle makes for a much better night's sleep in a rooftop tent. See our levelling on grass guide.

Ladders on grass

Make sure your ladder sits firmly on the grass, especially after rain.

Day trips

One downside of a rooftop tent is that you have to pack it away to drive. Plan days out from the campsite on foot where you can. The South West Coast Path is about half a mile away, and Boscastle is about two miles.

Awnings

Many rooftop tents have an awning for cooking and sitting out. Awnings are free at our campsite.

Driving the lanes

A vehicle with a rooftop tent is higher than usual, so watch out for low branches and height restrictions in car parks. Cornish lanes are often narrow with high hedges. See our Cornish lanes guide.

Things to do nearby

  • Boscastle: about two miles. See our camping in Boscastle page.
  • Tintagel: about seven miles. See our Tintagel guide.
  • Crackington Haven: about five miles.
  • Bodmin Moor: about six miles.
  • Bude: about 15 miles.

See our things to do page.

Sunsets and stars

On clear nights, our rural location offers great skies. Climb up into your tent and look out at the stars. Read our sunsets and stargazing guide.

What to bring

  • Levelling ramps.
  • A 25m cable if booking electric.
  • Warm bedding, as nights can be cool even in summer.
  • Food and supplies, as there's no shop on site.
  • Waterproofs.

When to come

We're open from 1 April to 31 October, with reception hours from 9am to 7pm. Spring and autumn nights can be chilly in a rooftop tent, so bring extra layers.

A weekend plan

  1. Friday: arrive, set up and walk to the coast path for sunset.
  2. Saturday: walk to Boscastle harbour and along the Valency Valley.
  3. Sunday: pack up and stop at Tintagel or Crackington Haven on the way home.

Rooftop tent or ground tent?

Rooftop tents are quick to set up and keep you off wet grass, but you need to pack them away whenever you drive. Ground tents let you leave your camp set up while you explore. Both work well at our site, so choose what suits your trip. See our tent camping page and our best tent for Cornwall guide.

Rainy days

Even in a rainy spell, a rooftop tent can be cosy, but have a plan for the day. Visit the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic in Boscastle, explore Launceston, or drive to an indoor attraction. See our rainy day ideas. Make sure your tent fabric is dry before you pack it away for a long period, to avoid mould.

Be a good neighbour

Rooftop tents go up quickly, but car engines, doors and ladders can be noisy. Please keep noise down early and late, and respect the peace of the fields for other campers.
