In short

Spring flowers, summer holidays or quiet autumn days? Here is what Boscastle is like through the camping season.

Boscastle is beautiful at any time of year, but the experience changes a lot with the seasons. In August the harbour is busy, the pubs are buzzing and the beaches nearby are full. In April and October you might have a clifftop almost to yourself. This guide walks through the months we are open at Lower Pennycrocker Farm, from 1 April to 31 October, to help you choose when to visit.

Weather in Cornwall can change quickly at any time of year, so pack waterproofs whatever the month.

Quick summary

Month Crowds Highlights
April Quiet, busy at Easter Primroses, lambs, fresh green valleys
May Quiet to moderate Bluebells, sea pinks, long evenings
June Moderate Long days, wildflowers, calm seas
July Busy Warm weather, school holidays from late July
August Busiest Summer holiday atmosphere, beach days
September Moderate to quiet Warm sea, golden light, quieter beaches
October Quiet, busier at half-term Autumn colour, dramatic seas, stargazing

April

April is the start of our season. The hedges are full of primroses and the valleys are turning green. Easter can be busy around the bank holiday, but the rest of the month is quiet. Nights can be cold, so bring warm sleeping bags. It is a great month for walking, with clear air and few people on the coast path.

May

May is a favourite for many of our regulars. Bluebells fill the woods of the Valency valley and the cliffs come alive with thrift, also called sea pinks. Days are long, and the two bank holidays bring a little extra bustle. Try the Valency Valley walk in early May.

June

June brings the longest days of the year, and evenings on the cliffs can be magical. The schools are still in term, so it is quieter than high summer. Wildflowers are at their best on the Forrabury Stitches.

July

From late July, the school summer holidays begin and Boscastle gets busier. The weather is often at its warmest, and families flock to nearby beaches. Book early if you want specific dates.

August

August is peak season. The harbour, car parks and pubs are at their busiest. If you visit in August, arrive in the village early or late and plan beach days for the morning. It is a fun, lively time to be here, and the long evenings back at the campsite are lovely. Our booking tips post explains how to secure dates.

September

Once the schools go back, Boscastle becomes calmer. The sea is often at its warmest, the light turns golden and the beaches empty out. September is ideal for couples, walkers and families with children under school age.

October

October is our last month. The coast takes on a wilder feel with dramatic seas, and the evenings are dark early, which is perfect for stargazing. October half-term brings families back for a week. Bring extra layers for chilly nights. Our autumn camping guide has more tips.

Best time for...

Walking

April, May, June and September. Cooler temperatures, fewer people and great light.

Families

The summer holidays, Easter and half-terms are when most families come. For a quieter family break, consider late May half-term or early June if your children are not yet at school. See Boscastle with kids.

Photography

Spring for flowers, autumn for drama, and any clear evening for sunset over the sea.

Avoiding crowds

Weekdays in April, May, June, September and October. Even in August, the village is calm before 9am and after the day visitors leave in the evening.

Wildlife

Spring for nesting seabirds and wildflowers, late summer and autumn for seals and migrating birds.

Rainy days

Every month can bring a wet day. When it rains, Boscastle still has plenty to offer: the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic, the visitor centre, cafés and pubs. The sea is often at its most dramatic in rough weather, best watched from a safe distance. See our rainy day ideas for more.

Planning tips

  • Book early for the school holidays and bank holidays.
  • Check tide times if you plan to see the blowhole at the harbour mouth or visit tidal beaches.
  • Pack for all weather. A sunny morning can become a wet afternoon.
  • Consider midweek stays outside the holidays for the quietest experience.

Why stay outside the village

Staying at Lower Pennycrocker Farm, about two miles from Boscastle, means you can visit the village when it suits you and escape the bustle in the evenings. Our fields are quiet, with sea views and dark skies. See our camping in Boscastle page for more about the site.
