In short

When Boscastle gets busy, when it is quiet, and how campers staying nearby can enjoy the harbour, Valency valley and coast path without the crowds.

Boscastle is one of north Cornwall's best-loved villages, and on a sunny August afternoon it shows. Staying two miles away at Lower Pennycrocker Farm gives you a big advantage: you can visit when day-trippers are not there. This guide explains when Boscastle is busy, when it is quiet, and how to time your visit.

The busiest months

Boscastle is busiest during the school summer holidays (late July to early September), on bank holiday weekends and during half terms, especially the late-May half term. Easter can also be busy when the weather is good. See Cornwall school holiday dates and bank holiday camping.

The quieter months are generally April (outside Easter), June, September and October. Our guide to the best time to visit Boscastle goes through the year month by month.

The busiest times of day

On a busy day, the pattern is fairly predictable:

Time What to expect
Before 10am Quiet. Locals, walkers and early risers.
10am – 11am Car parks start to fill.
11am – 4pm Peak time. Harbour, shops and cafés busiest.
After 5pm Day visitors leave. Pubs get busy for food, but the harbour is calm.

Parking at busy times

The main car park near the harbour can fill up on sunny days in the summer holidays. Arriving before 10am, or after 4pm, makes it much easier. Our Boscastle parking guide has the details. Better still, walk in from the coast path or take the bus: see car-free days out from Boscastle.

How to enjoy Boscastle without the crowds

  • Go early. Walk out to the harbour mouth and Willapark lookout before breakfast. See Willapark lookout.
  • Go late. Have supper at a village pub, then stroll around the harbour at dusk.
  • Head up the valley. The Valency valley is quieter than the harbour even at busy times. See Valency valley walk.
  • Visit on a changeable day. A showery forecast keeps many day visitors away.
  • Choose midweek. Saturdays and Sundays are busiest.

Rainy-day crowds

When it rains in summer, indoor attractions fill up. The Museum of Witchcraft and Magic in Boscastle is popular on wet days, so go early. See our rainy days in north Cornwall page for alternatives.

A sample quiet day in Boscastle

Here is how we would plan a summer day in the village to dodge the crowds:

  1. 8am: Walk or drive down early, park easily and stroll out to the harbour mouth while the light is soft.
  2. 9:30am: Coffee and a pasty as the bakeries and cafés open.
  3. 11am: Leave the village as the car parks fill. Head for a beach, Tintagel or a coast path walk.
  4. 5:30pm: Come back for an early pub supper.
  5. 8pm: A last walk around the quiet harbour before heading back to the farm.

Weekdays in June and September often feel peaceful all day, so you can relax the timings then.

Is the campsite busy too?

Lower Pennycrocker Farm is busiest in July and August and on bank holidays, but it is a quiet farm site with no bar or entertainment, so evenings stay peaceful. See quiet camping in Cornwall.
