In short

When to walk the South West Coast Path in north Cornwall, season by season, with practical tips for walkers basing themselves near Boscastle.

The South West Coast Path is a 630-mile National Trail running from Minehead in Somerset to Poole Harbour in Dorset, around the whole of Devon and Cornwall. The north Cornwall section around Boscastle is one of its most dramatic, with high cliffs, deep valleys and plenty of ascent. Lower Pennycrocker Farm is about half a mile from the path, so we see walkers all season. This guide explains the best time of year to walk it here.

Spring (April and May)

Spring is a favourite with many walkers. The cliffs are bright with wildflowers, seabirds are nesting, and the paths are generally quieter than in summer, apart from Easter and bank holidays. The days are getting longer, and temperatures are comfortable for long climbs.

Watch for: cool winds, wet ground after rain, and occasional sea fog.

Summer (June to August)

Summer gives the longest days, which means more time to cover distance and more flexibility if the weather changes. June is especially good, with long evenings before the school holidays begin.

Watch for: heat on exposed sections with little shade, busy car parks and villages in July and August, and the need to carry plenty of water.

Autumn (September and October)

September is often excellent: the sea is at its warmest, the crowds have thinned, and heather and gorse colour the cliffs. October brings dramatic skies and big seas, and the paths feel wilder.

Watch for: shorter days, the first Atlantic storms, and muddy sections in the valleys.

Winter

The path is open all year, but winter brings short days, strong winds and slippery paths. We are closed from November to March, so for a camping trip here the best months are April to October.

Our pick for north Cornwall

For most people, late May, June and September strike the best balance of daylight, weather and quiet paths. See spring camping in Cornwall and the best time to visit Boscastle.

What makes the north Cornwall section demanding

The path between Crackington Haven, Boscastle and Tintagel climbs in and out of deep valleys, and some stretches are among the toughest on the whole trail. Distances that look short on a map can take longer than you expect. Allow plenty of time, and turn back if the weather turns.

Walking from Lower Pennycrocker Farm

From the farm, you can walk to the path in about half a mile and choose your direction:

  • South to Boscastle for the harbour and a pub lunch.
  • On to Tintagel: see the Boscastle to Tintagel walk.
  • North towards Crackington Haven for a more strenuous day.

Our post on the coast path from Pennycrocker has more detail, and walks near Boscastle lists shorter options. Walkers staying a few nights can use the 95 bus for one-way walks: see car-free days out from Boscastle.

Safety on the path

  • The path is often unfenced near cliff edges.
  • Check the weather: see north Cornwall weather for campers.
  • Carry water, food, a waterproof and a charged phone.
  • Tell someone your route and expected return.
  • Keep dogs on leads near edges and livestock.
