Summer Camping in Cornwall

in our own words

Sunset over a north Cornwall beach in summer

Long evenings, warm seas and beach days: summer is the classic time to camp in Cornwall. It is also the busiest. Lower Pennycrocker Farm offers a calmer alternative to big holiday parks: a family-run farm near Boscastle, about half a mile from the South West Coast Path, with space, free showers and parking beside your pitch.

What summer at the farm is like

There is no bar, pool or entertainment, so evenings are about sunsets, cards outside the tent and a walk to the cliffs. Families like it because children have room to play close to the tent; couples and walkers like it because it stays quiet at night. July and August are our busiest months, so book early, especially for school holiday weeks.

Beating the summer crowds

  • Get to beaches early. Car parks fill on sunny days. Our beaches near Boscastle page lists the nearest options.
  • Visit Boscastle and Tintagel early or late. Our guide to when Boscastle is busy explains the pattern.
  • Use the bus. The 95 links Boscastle with Tintagel and Bude: see car-free days out.
  • Travel midweek if you can, and avoid Saturday mornings on the A30 and A39.

Summer days out

A simple summer day plan

Start with a walk on the coast path from the farm while the air is cool and the paths are empty. Drive to a beach mid-morning, ideally checking the tide times the night before so you arrive as the sand is uncovering. Head back to the farm for a late lunch and a quiet afternoon in the shade of the car or awning. Then, once day visitors leave, drive into Boscastle for an evening stroll around the harbour and supper at one of the pubs. Finish back at your pitch for sunset, which on a clear midsummer evening comes after 9pm.

Summer camping tips

Summer on the north coast can still be breezy and cool at night. Pack sun cream and a warm fleece, a hat and waterproofs. Bring plenty of water for coast walks. Our seasonal packing guide has a summer list.
